Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 reshapes builds, Atlas progression, crafting, and class balance, with Martial Artist and Spirit Walker rising while Bloodmage and some melee setups fall.

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5, "Return of the Ancients," doesn't feel like a light balance pass. It feels like the game has been picked up, shaken hard, and put back down with a new endgame spine. Players who were already planning starters are now checking every passive, every ascendancy node, and even their stash plans for PoE2 Currency, because the old answers don't all work anymore. The Atlas has clearer direction, defenses ask for more layering, and a lot of builds that used to brute-force content now need a cleaner plan.

New ascendancies are getting the loudest buzz

The Martial Artist for Monk is probably the easiest winner to spot. Clone play, Hollow Form tricks, bell detonations, and Power Charge scaling all point in the same direction: fast maps, sharp burst, and a playstyle that doesn't just stand still trading hits. It looks risky on paper, sure, but that's part of the appeal. Spirit Walker is in a similar spot for Huntress players. It leans into movement, companions, and Runic Ward in a way that feels built for this patch rather than patched into it later. That matters. When a new system arrives, the best builds are often the ones that don't have to fight it.

Casters may have quietly gained ground

Chronomancer is the surprise name many players keep coming back to. Before this update, it often felt clever but not always worth the effort. Now its timing tools, delayed damage handling, and Energy Shield recovery angles make a lot more sense. You can't just stack defenses and ignore the screen anymore. Recovery windows matter. So does control. That's why spell builds, especially Stormweaver setups using Spark, Orb of Storms, chill, and freeze, still look strong for early progression. They clear well, they keep monsters away, and they don't seem as punished by the attack and melee adjustments that hit several weapon builds.

The Atlas finally has a reason to pull you forward

One of the better changes has nothing to do with one class being stronger than another. It's the endgame structure itself. The old Atlas could feel like you were just running maps because that's what the game told you to do. Patch 0.5 gives regions more identity, adds clearer goals, and builds toward fortress encounters and story arcs. That kind of structure helps casual players know what they're chasing, but it also helps grinders because rewards feel less random. Delirium, Ritual, and Breach also seem easier to read now. Less visual noise, better pacing, fewer moments where the whole screen turns into soup.

Old power tricks are taking the hit

Bloodmage is one of the rougher losers. Leech limits, Covenant changes, and Atziri's Acuity adjustments all cut into the sustain loops that made expensive trigger setups feel safe. It won't vanish, but it'll ask for better gear and more careful play. Some melee builds are in the same boat. Splash tuning, slam changes, and hits to common clear patterns mean Rolling Slam, Whirling Assault, and Boneshatter-style setups may need rethinking. Recombinator crafting changes also sting for players who liked having a reliable path to elite gear. People checking markets for PoE2 Currency buy will probably notice how much these crafting shifts affect early prices, especially as players move toward hybrid defenses and builds that can adapt instead of leaning on one broken interaction.
